English - Speaking and Listening
Speaking and Listening
Our Intent for Speaking and Listening
At Fleet Infant School, we believe that a high-quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of speaking and listening. Through the teaching of English, we are equipping children with key life skills enabling them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners; to become independent young people, with the appropriate skills, values and learning to become successful in whatever their future will be. Language is fundamental to making meaning and to develop our views and opinions of the world around us, so it is crucial for children to learn to communicate fluently in spoken form.
Implementation of Speaking and Listening
We follow the National Curriculum aims to create articulate, confident speakers who are able to express themselves and discuss their opinions clearly, as well as listening effectively to others.
We teach the skills across the whole curriculum and through a variety of different forms. Drama and role-play allow the children to explore their own feelings, develop speaking and listening skills and learn about the world around them. We build in opportunities to teach the conventions of spoken language, for example how to present, to debate and to explain their thinking.
Across the year, we have several opportunities for children to perform to an audience and use these skills including, poetry assemblies, Nativity, Spring play, learning and work share, book looks and many more.
Impact
By the time our children leave us at the end of Key Stage 1, we want them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken language. We want them to have developed confidence when presenting through the opportunities to share their learning. We aim for them to use intonation, expression and to communicate fluently in spoken form.
