Year 2

What have we been learning this week?

Week Commencing Monday 23rd March 2026
This week:

A huge thank you to all parents for your support in helping the children create their dioramas. They looked absolutely fantastic, and we truly appreciate the time and effort that went into them.

In English, the children designed their own pages using pictures and text they wrote themselves, ready to showcase their hard work in the Titanic exhibition. In Maths, we have been working on an addition unit within the context of place value. The children solved addition problems using an unstructured number line and by bridging through ten. They also used the inverse of addition to solve more complex missing number problems. In RE, the children sequenced the story of Easter and labelled different parts as happy or sad. In Science, we learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly and created food chains based on a pond habitat.  In Art, the children completed their final pieces, featuring an ocean background, a Titanic sketch, and collage elements.

How you can help: Please continue to read with your child at least three times per week. You will receive a copy of the Common Exception Words spelling test. The highlighted spellings are those the child is secure with. If any spellings are not highlighted, these are the ones they need to practise.

Have a lovely Easter break when it begins!

Year 2 – Spring Term Curriculum Map 2026

Our Topic this term is 'Adventures Far and Wide'. Below are some of the things the children will be learning this term.

Key information

Key words

In Year 2 it is expected that children will read key words on sight, or be able to fluently apply their phonics to read them.  Throughout the year children will also be learning to spell these words.  Some of these words are 'tricky words' that cannot be sounded out (e.g. said) and some of these words require the children to apply their phonics knowledge (e.g. sound them out). See below the words the children will be covering in Year 2, through their phonics lessons, spelling time and the English curriculum.

Reading

Your child will bring home a scheme book appropriate for their reading level in their book bag each day.  Once the book has been read either at home or school, and this has been recorded in the red or yellow reading log, your child will be able to change their book to get the next one in that particular scheme.  Thank you for your continued support in reading regularly with your child at home.

Letter formation

Your child will continue to practise the letter formation that they learnt in Year R and 1.  In Year 2, the children will then start to develop a neat joined handwriting style.
